probably not - base metals are hard to resolder and shape it could be made of anything.

It would depend on what it's plating? There could be silver underneath, which could be re-sized but if it isn't I'd say not!

Any jeweler that does repairs can do it for for you or tell you if the quality of the base metal is good enough to do so. Re-plating may be necessary to make it bigger so it may not be worth it. That is not likely though. Check with a good jeweler.

If it's silver, then yes, you can re-size it. It doesn't matter if you size it up or down.... both ways, the ring needs to be cut and soldered (welded) back together, then filed and smoothed out, and eventually polished so that you can't see the line from where it has been cut. Because of the polishing and heat involved, it will need to be re-plated so that it's even. Normally, sizing a silver ring down would cost no more than $15, but because you have to re-plate it, it will include the price for doing that as well..

umm don't listen to the "cheap gold ring guy" many girls love the symbolism of the ring... and they shouldn't care the cost.

Anyway... the most economical gold ring will be one that is hollowed out underneath. This gives the appearance of a solid band... but underneath the gold goes in rather than flat. There is nothing wrong with this and no one can see. In fact.. many peoples rings even with diamonds are hollowed out.

Next, get a lower karat of gold. go with 10K...looks just as good as the others and it will be more durable. You are looking at less than $100 dollars (depending on her ring size). Try a real jeweler.. not a chain store where they don't have any idea what they are talking about and can't really "haggle prices" with you. They know the base amount of gold.

How about saving up for a nicer ring, say for her birthday, Christmas, etc. and get her something else that you know she likes. If you definitely want to buy now, look for 10 karat gold instead of 14 karat. It looks and wears the same but is much more inexpensive. The tag should state what the karat of the ring is. Buy something without a stone. That will also cut down on the price. Buy only at a reputable store that you can be sure is selling you real gold. Also, do not fall for the "50-80% off" scam that some jewelry stores use on customers. Good luck! :)

Talk to a jeweler. Gold is running just under $28/gram right now, but you don't need much to plate onto a ring or a chain, unless it's a big honking chain. Alloys are harder than pure gold, and might wear better. You might consider 18K gold, or see what the jeweler says.

Debating whether to get a platinum or white gold ring... platinum is much more expensive, but will getting a white gold ring re-rhodium plated every year cost more in the long run?

STAFFORD TOWNSHIP - A crowd of senior citizens gathered at the township branch of the Ocean County Library carrying small bags and boxes of gold and silver pieces to trade for cash. The Friends of the Stafford Library, which organized the event, called it a gold party, but the mood was indifferent. The crowd sipped from cups of coffee, and a cookie platter sat mostly untouched.

Surprisingly, many of those who attended the party in the basement of the library were trading what would be considered sentimental pieces for cash. But at their older ages, many of them said they did not feel sentimental. Members of the crowd sat in chairs watching and waiting as Chris Biele, owner of Atlantic City Jewelry, weighed and evaluated gold and silver earrings, bracelets, rings and even teeth.

Stanley Kaziewicz, 80, of Stafford Township, said that over the past 10 years he has lost $200,000 out of his 401(k) plan. He said he retired as a technician from Bell Labs 20 years ago and has watched as his benefits have been cut.

Kaziewicz held a sealed glass lab tube full of gold-plated brass screws he received as a gag gift from co-workers after 10 years with Bell Labs. He said he hoped Biele would give him cash for the corny present.

"If this is gold, I be rich," Kaziewicz said through a thick Polish accent.

Inside his brown paper bag, he also had a 14-karat gold tie clip with the Bell Labs insignia.

"I don't need this anymore. It's a good way to make extra money. At my age, what's sentimental? What do I do with old tie clip? When I retired, they gave me a gold watch. That I keep," he said and smiled.

Joan Gigstead, 71, of Stafford Township, clutched a sandwich bag, inside of which was a napkin ring that belonged to Gigstead's mother. Her mother's name, Paula, is engraved on the napkin ring. Gigstead said as a child, everyone used cloth napkins and had a napkin ring, but this piece is no longer a memento.

"The primary thing for me is getting rid of stuff that's been accumulating in my drawer and finding out what it's worth," Gigstead said.
