Pearl ring instead of a diamond ring?
May 22, 2008 by Brandy D | Posted in Weddings
My fiance told me he wanted to buy me a diamond ring for when we get married, but what if I get a pearl or pearl/diamond ring? Does it really have to be diamond? I'd like a pearl ring, but he said that it isn't proper. Your opinions?
ALSO: I know nothing about pearls, really. A little white pearl on a gold, silver, or platinum band is fine with me. But how do I identify a real pearl from a fake? Where can I find a genuine pearl ring?
Crazier idea:
I'm not a jewelry person. Especially rings, I tend to fukc them up because I use my hands a lot. Will people think I'm a moron, or could it be offensive, if I wear the ring on a steel link chain? Or just a really pretty chain, that isn't dainty? Do most wives wear their wedding ring every day, or like on dates or special occasions?
My dad gave my mom a pearl when he asked her to marry him. The ring is still in great condition after 40 years. The pearl is my favorite stone (I like them better than diamonds, although I would never say no to a diamond!) An engagement ring can be any (or no) stone that you chose. Remember Princess Diana's engagement ring, it was a sapphire. A fake pearl will feel smooth when you rub it on your teeth. a real one will feel a little rough.
If you are afraid of hurting your ring while working, by all means take it off and put it on a chain. Also with a pearl you will want to take it off when you will be in contact with any liquids.

Whatever stone you want should be fine. Just remeber that pearls are really soft and need to be cared for very carefully. As far as getting a real pearl, go to a reputable dealer who has good reviews and will give you a certificate of authenticity.

Pearls may wear out with daily use and contact with water, etc. Other then issues with durability, there's nothing wrong with getting a more unique stone in your engagement ring!
learning_to_live_616 | May 22, 2008
A pearl ring is perfectly fine. Any gemstone (or none at all) is fine for a ring. You also don't need a ring to get engaged or married.
Talk to a jeweler.
casper4 | May 22, 2008
Pearls last forever too. As long as it has a stone and you like it, that's all that matters. :)
If a pearl is real, it will feel gritty when you rub it against your teeth. A jeweler taught me that.
EDITED - If you use your hands a lot, I would avoid getting a pearl unless it's set where it's not sticking out of the ring. Cabochan setting?

You get whatever you want honey, just be aware that some stones are more fragile than others. I'd get a band for everyday wear in that case. Also, ask a jeweler. They'll give you all the pros and cons. Congrats!

Pearls are totally lovely, especially paired up with diamonds. However, if my guy had a preference and wanted to give me a diamond, I sure wouldn't do or say anything to change his mind- yikes!
Go to a reputable jewellery store, and educate yourself about what types of pearls there are.
As for wedding rings, I wear them ALL the time. So do the vast majority of women I know.
I'd choose something similar to this - because it would be easier to fit a wedding band to it. - And I would want a cultured pearl.

You can tell a real pearl from a fake pearl by putting the pearl against your tooth and softly passing it over the end of it. If the pearl is rough; it's real. If it's smooth; it's fake.
This doesn't damage the pearl in any way, so don't worry about that. You might look a little strange in the shop, but they can either give you a certificate to prove it's real, or you do the tooth test. It's a well-known method.
I think a pearl ring would be lovely as an e-ring.

If you want a pearl, I think that's fine. Read up on caring for pearls, because if not cared for propely, they can loose their shine, and there's no way to get it back. I have a sapphire, because I think they are more beautiful and unique than diamonds, and when I work, I hang it around my neck on a chain.

My grandmother had a pearl ring as an engagement ring....that was back around 1922 and she was a very proper New England Lady with a finishing school education....
...just learn about the proper care of pearls....and enjoy your ring.

I'm not sure if you're the one that was asking about pearl wedding sets last week, but they're hard to find! I looked all over for that person and couldn't find any. You'd probably have to just get a normal pearl ring without a band, or get one custom made (not as pricey as you'd think). The only concern is that pearls are very delicate and might not hold up well over time, but you could always get a new ring at that point, or replace the pear. I'll bet As for wearing it on a chain, my sister-in-law does that for the same reason. Works just as well!

I love the pearl idea!!! I for one think too much emphasis is put on the engagment ring, how big it is, etc. I would rather have the $3,000 for expanding our house or a vacation honestly. I have a diamond tiara engagement ring and my fiance is getting my mom's diamond set for me as well but seriously, get what you want, you will wear it for the rest of your life. Pearls are soft though so if you are hard on rings, maybe a stronger stone, ruby, emerald, sapphire. I am hard on rings too and I work in law enforcement so I would hate to lose my diamond, seriously! I would not wear my diamond for work, just my band. Good luck on the hunt for your perfect ring!

Pearls are verrrry classy! Especially when paired with diamonds!! My mom's wedding ring is just plain gold with some swirly designs around it, no "rock" or jewels of any kind. For my parents' anniversary one year, my dad got her a beautiful diamond ring - something they could not afford when they were first married. My mom wears her ring all the time, except maybe to the gym or when doing dishes, that type of thing... I'm not married *yet* but I have an engagement ring.. it's beautiful, but I always forget to put it on until I'm already in the car driving and see that it's not on my finger!! As for putting it on a chain, I would not recommend that. In most cases, it looks very tacky. When I see someone wearing a ring on a chain, I tend to think it belongs to someone else (like a relative who has passed away, or a boyfriend). Go to any jewelry store "chain" (like Kay, Helzberg, etc.) - ones that you can find in a mall are a good bet, because they will be relatively inexpensive. Remember, you can always upgrade in the future!!

ring for christmas?!! if not-what do you think it is?!!!?
Dec 18, 2008 by saydei j | Posted in Family
been with my bf for almost 4 years. i'm planning on moving in with him when my lease is up at my apt this coming Feb (most of my stuff has already been packed up and moved into his house). about a year ago I told him that I would not move in with him unless we were engaged b/c I felt it wouldn't set a good example for my 3 daughters (ages 9,7,and 6 from a previous marriage) that we have part-time-he agreed to this. he's a wonderful man, we love each other to death, and he treats my girls as his own.
over the past 2 weeks he's been saying things that makes me think i might be getting my engagement ring for christmas (i'm not getting my hopes up though-I don't want to be upset if it's not my ring). I already have a necklace, pearl earrings, and a pearl ring that I wear on my right hand-I don't need any other jewelry besides my engagement ring. here are the things that he's been saying
-told me while we were laying in bed the other day and I was wearing black pj's-"you look good in black, but you look good in white too" with a huge grin on his face
-we are hosting christmas at his house this year-his family is here from out of town. while in bed he cupped my face w/his hands and said "this christmas is going to be great-you'll never forget it"
-told me 2 days ago "The present I want to get you is extremely expensive and I can't afford it" so I told him to find something else in it's place. he said ok.
-I sent him an email last night while at work and suggested that he find something similar to what he wants to get me that he can't afford and then just upgrade it later to what he originally wanted to buy (his brother in law did this w/his sister's engagement ring). he read the email this morning in front of me and laughed saying "I think you know what i'm getting you." then said "I just don't want you to be disappointed b/c it's not exactly what I wanted to get you-I can't afford it for right now." I then told him I would like whatever he gets-upgrading it later would be fine and he asked me "are you sure?" and I said yes.
-he then told me that he told his mom and sister about what he was getting me and he said their reaction was "they'd be very happy"
all these seem like proposal hints to me but i'm not sure!!! what do you tthink?!!!
i'm asking alot b/c i'm just overly excited and the wait is KILLING me (lol)!!!
don't keep answering it if it's bothering you-duh!!
Yes I do believe so, It has to definitely be THE RING what else could it be with those hints.

Lots of action for Saturday, March 13. I did my best to preview all the Maiden Special Weights, but came up a little short.
March 12 Results
A Heavenly Performance
The race was taken off the turf, and Go Ask Alex (Afleet Alex - Dominique's Joy by Strawberry Road (AUS)) was scratched. She'll run instead against the boys on March 13 on the Fair Grounds turf (see below). Go Ask Alex was one of many scratches in this one. Left in the race were: Sheryl's Melody (More Than Ready - Gera by Capote), Harpoon Hattie (Tiznow - Hardy Har Har by Storm Cat), Senorita Margarita (Elusive Quality - Guiza by Golden Act), How Far to Heaven (Distorted Humor - Beyond Venus by War Chant), Au Dixie (Dixie Union - Kris Pit by Kris S.), Between Raindrops (A. P. Indy - Beaucette by Mr. Prospector), and Smarty's Dream (Smarty Jones - Dream Regally by Vice Regent). How Far to Heaven was favored, and she went right to the lead. Harpoon Hattie pursued her into the stretch. Sheryl's Melody made a move late, but there was no catching How Far to Heaven, who came home a winner. Watch the Replay .
