I'm using a 53/42T chain ring combination & 11-28 cogset on my roadbike. Is it ok to change the 42T to 39T?

I haven't use it yet on steep roads & hills and I'm planning to use it now so I think it might be right to change the inner chain ring to 39 T or lesser. What do you think guys?

Give your 42 a chance before you toss him to the side. Go try your bike on those hills before changing anything and see if you can hack it with what you have. If you're dead tired and have nothing left when you finish, keep things how they are because guess what, if you can make it on your first time, you can make it every other time and you'll only get stronger. If you're riding in a group, don't worry about keeping up, just do your own thing and spin your heart out.

If you're really looking to spend the money on something, set aside how ever much cash a new ring is going to set you back. After a few weeks when you're convinced you don't really need the new ring, use the money set aside for a "Victory Over the Hills" party! Or, if you have to, go get that new ring, at least at that point you won't have doubts about whether you need it or not.

you could but i dont think you need to 42-28 is a granny gear
but if you want the granny gear of granny gears than go ahead and change it

Sure it's OK. 53x39 is standard. Where'd you pick up the 42 anyhoo? Back in the day 52x42 was the most common but not any more.

It's only a difference of (approx) 3 gear inches. Not really worth the hassle is it?

I would buy a compact chainset instead - A whole chainset is pretty good value when you consider how much a new (good) chainring costs...

Yes and it is a good choice. As the others noted if that still isn't low enough, a compact (50/34) is the way to go.

I think you should try going to a 50/34T or 50/36 compact crankset if you are planning on riding and climbing for long periods of time on steep hills.

My suggest would be to go to a 50/34T or 50/36T compact crankset with a 12-25 or 12-27 rear cassette. With a 34-25 or 34-27 lowest gear ration, you should be able to spin comfortably up a steep hill. Even a 36-25 or 36-27 should take you up a good incline.

Hope this helps,

A.

Does anyone know where I can get the smallest chain-ring for my miyatta sixten bicycle?

I think it it a Biopace Oval ring , no longer in production. Alas, I trashed mine on the last ride, I don't want to replace everything including the stack and chain

Try eBay.

Try Harris Cyclery, Sheldon Brown is a biopace fan. He doesnt list them for sale on his site but might have some - contact him.

Are there any adverse effects of wearing a gold chain w/ring continuously?

I have a gold chain that I wear all the time. There is also a gold ring on it. I was wondering if wearing it at all times would wear down the chain/ring, if it was ok to wear it while sleeping/showering, etc. Would it shorten the "lifespan" of the chain? Thanks.
It's not a rope chain, it's a link one. I'm not quite sure what style, though. I think it looks like the Gucci design.

I make it a point to take it off before any type physical activity. It's more of a daily, walking around type thing. See, I'm worried that my tossing and turning at night might break it, or it'll rust after I shower.

And ladypoet, I'm just trying to keep my chain in good condition. That's what I mean by "lifespan."

Gold is very malleable, so wearing it too often (especially if you play with it or if it gets bumped around a lot) can have the potential to cause damage. Water shouldn't be a problem though, so it doesn't matter if you shower with it on.

I hope it's not a rope chain!!! Those are the worst, you need a marine link or figaro, those are the more sturdy ones.

very weird question...it wont shorten its "lifespan" the most it could do is break but it could do that if u just wear it 1 day a yr...so go ahead indulge wear it day and night...

if you are so concerned about your gold chain place it in a glass case and display it in front of your house with a note 'Please do not touch'

no it does not hav any effects even it does not shorten ur lifespan we wear gold becoz we like to use it even i do wear a gold chain but it doesnt effect us in any way even u could wear it for ur whole life there is no need to worry

If its real gold you should be fine you just need to periodically take it off and polish it with a gold polishing rag.

would a 3 piece crank fit any chain ring?

does every chain ring have the same size hole in the middle? if so would i be able to fit any chain ring into the 3 piece crank?

No... There are several different types of chain rings that go with different types of cranks. You will want to check compatibility before buying...

Check out http://www.snapbmxproducts.com/index2.html
They have some really killer stuff....

Can kinks be removed from an 0-ring chain?

Or does it need to be replaced? My chain has two master links from what I can tell (they are the only two that are riveted) and both links are kinked. The 0-ring is also coming out of one of the links.

Never mess with an old or damaged chain. Replace it. Not only can it cause you to get stuck out on the road, if it comes apart while your riding can cause you a serious accident in some cases. Replace it with a good chain and use a riveted master link not the clip type. Have someone that knows what they are doing install it.

Church bells to ring climate alarm as faith joins science in Denmark Episcopal News Service

When church bells start ringing in Copenhagen, and all around the world, on Dec. 13, they will not be heralding an early arrival of Christmas. Rather they will peal out a call to action and prayer to respond to impending climate change.

More than 100 world political leaders, as well as faith leaders and supporters of action to deal with climate change, are converging on the Danish capital. There a crucial United Nations meeting began on Dec. 7 to set the international agenda on climate, so that the city can live with the nickname of "Hopenhagen" that it has been given by one group of campaigners.

On Dec. 13 before participating in a climate change service, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu and activists from around the world will present a global petition to Yvo de Boer, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The event is organized by the global Countdown to Copenhagen Campaign, which includes church-related development organizations, partner groups in the Global South and the World Council of Churches, in cooperation with Hopenhagen, the name of the campaign.

Representatives of nearly 200 nations will look to powerful countries to pave the way for rules and action to deal with climate change, and there to cajole and persuade the leaders will be thousands of representatives of advocacy groups.

Mingling and working with many of the activist groups will be representatives of major faiths, including bishops, imams, rabbis and priests. During the 11 days there will be workshops, services and protests.

Churches will chime in with their main attempt to awaken the world about the need to look after the planet, by sounding their bells or other instruments 350 times at 3 p.m. wherever they are.

The 350 chimes represent the parts per million that mark what many scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Groups that include the Open Sanctuary at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Tilba Tilba, Australia, the Lutheran congregation in Sibiu, Romania, and Kairos, an ecumenical organization in Canada, are to participate.
