Beetle adds value to heirloom brooch Press of Atlantic City

Question: The gold pin that appears in my photos has been an heirloom for longer than anyone in my family can remember. It is marked with a crown, "18ct Birmingham" and another stamp that is illegible. The pin is 2 inches long and decorated with a shiny, green bug that may be glass. I have not seen similar pieces and would appreciate information about mine. - L.R., North Wildwood

Answer: The "18ct Birmingham" mark on your unusual antique brooch indicates it is an 18-carat gold item made in England. Hand fashioned by a skilled goldsmith, it features a real, iridescent scarab beetle - a species of the dung beetle - mounted on a beautifully engraved grape leaf. The beetle's tiny gold legs and antennae complete the realistically detailed jewelry.

Your brooch is one of many pieces created during the third Egyptian Revival (1870-1910), when discoveries of ancient tombs and artifacts generated interest in Egyptian symbols and ornamentation. The motifs were incorporated into the design of architecture, art, furniture, glass and ceramics, as well as jewelry, where petrified scarab beetles were utilized to decorate necklaces, earrings, bracelets, brooches and stickpins. Brooches such as yours were fashioned during the late Victorian era by jewelers who chose the Egyptian scarab to enhance the naturalism of emerging Art Nouveau design.

Considered highly collectible, Victorian scarab jewelry is somewhat rare because the fragile beetles are easily damaged. Flawless stick pins presently sell for $75 to $100, bar pins bring $135 to $150 and your brooch is valued at $250 to $300.

Question: What can you tell me about the item shown in my photograph? It is 5 1/2 inches long and 3 inches high. The picture placed at its center is labeled "Wien." - J.D., Egg Harbor Township

Answer: The piece is a molded-glass, double inkstand with brass fittings. Centered between the stand's two lidded inkwells is a framed oval lithograph depicting a Viennese street scene.
